Both my parents were privileged to come to America to start a new life when they immigrated from the Czech Republic. But to survive and build a new life, they had to embrace a minimalistic and frugal lifestyle. Growing up we experienced financial hardships and had to do without on many occasions. But little did I know then that those situations were going to teach me invaluable lessons about financial wisdom and lead me to where I am today.

My dad was an extreme cheapskate who was an expert at saving money, however, I have to say that his extreme frugality did create some pretty embarrassing moments over the years. His memories will not only teach my family and I a few things, but they will also bring us laughter. There was never a dull moment when his creativity kicked in. My dad’s approach to spending money was on entertainment and travel. He was a man that enjoyed a good time.

My mom was and still is frugal and good at saving money too, but thankfully she spared us the embarrassing moments. She was a superhero at getting us through tough times all while she carried the burden well. There was nothing that she could not do, she was crafty and resourceful, which provided learning opportunities while saving money at the same time.  My mom’s approach to spending money was on fashion and creating a beautiful home. She was a woman that enjoyed the finer things that money could buy.

Both of my parents were industrious and good stewards nevertheless, they each valued money differently. Raised with both extremes was a struggle at times, yet it shaped me into who I am today. It led me to discover my own values about money and to work towards a life of balance. Balance is the key to a life filled with peace, especially around finances. To reach this point, I had to face countless trials of single motherhood that allowed me to truly grasp the significance of their teachings. Their wisdom was the light that guided me towards providing stability for my four children and becoming financially empowered.

Passing down the legacy of financial wisdom and stewardship is a powerful way for me to honor my parents. Having the opportunity to teach my children, and now my grandchildren, the value of discipline, humility, gratitude, and generosity is a gift that brings me such joy, not only because it is shaping their financial future but their character as well. It is a blessing that brings learning and growth, while it may involve tough love at times, it ultimately leads to a deeper appreciation and understanding of life's true riches.

Although God led me into the IT world almost 20 years ago, I have always had a desire for the financial world.  I love crunching numbers when it comes to budgeting and nothing excites me more than finding ways to save money.
